Na`alehu Farmers Market
Every Wednesday and Saturday, the local farmers` market appears in front of the Ace Hardware store in Na`alehu. This is a great place to find local products at farmer direct prices. Depending on the day, the market features local fruits and vegetables, local breads and sweets, and local artisans in a wide range of mediums. If even for a brief moment, a stop at our farmers` market is the best way to meet local residents and discover their many talents.
Hana Hou Restaurant
Located in Na`alehu and known for a large selection of deserts, they make a good hamburger on homemade buns and they offer enough choices on their menu to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions. The restaurant is owned and operated by Patty and Drake Fujimoto. They feature live music on Friday nights and occasionally on Saturday nights. There is a country diner atmosphere, with old style formica tables and a mish mash of photos and artwork on the walls. Diners can bring their own bottle of wine or beer without an additional charge. It's a great way to see life in rural Hawaii. 929-9117
Desert Rose Cafe
Located in Ocean View and known for homemade french fries, they do a very good job with fresh fish when they have it on their menu. They offer a varied menu that can accommodate most dietary restrictions and they often have a nice selection of baked goods for desert. They occasionally have live music and karaoke. The location is a little limited on atmoshere, but they more than make up for it with good fresh food. They offer beer and wine in house and allow BYOB for a small fee.
Volcano Restaurants
We recommend Thai Thai as perhaps the best Thai food on the island. We recommend the Lava Rock Cafe as a good choice for those looking for a variety of food choices. We have had good comments from guests on these restaurants, as well as some the Kiawe Kitchen, which features gourmet pizza. If you prefer more ambiance, the Kilauea Lodge is an option for dinner.
Punalu`u Bakery
Located in Na`alehu, this bakery is known for their sweet bread, which can be found throughout the state. A local favorite is their lilikoi malasada, which is baked fresh daily along with an assortment of other treats. They offer lunch items that are geared towards tourists. They are able to receive large groups from tour buses and have ample parking for cars.
Malama Market
Located in Ocean View, this is a good market to get lunch items for the cooler we provide you when you head off to South Kona for a day of snorkeling, kayking, and picnicing at Ho`okena Beach or Pu`uhonua `O Honaunau National Historic Park.
Ocean View Gas
Surprisingly, gasoline is much less expensive in Ocean View than in Kailua-Kona, nearly as low as the prices in Hilo. You can save as much as .30 cents a gallon. There are three stations to choose from, usually within a few cents of one another. This a good place to fill up your car.
